In the first few moments of The Hunting Ground, we see incoming freshmen overjoyed when they receive their college acceptance letters. military), tells the story of these statistics by spotlighting individual horror stories from campus rape survivors. The film, helmed by director Kirby Dick and producer Amy Ziering (the duo behind Invisible War, a documentary on sexual assaults in the U.S. Colleges worried about their brand and enrollment numbers brush these sexual assaults under the rug and protect offenders in the process. Colleges seem more preoccupied with their sexual assault statistics than the sexual assault victims themselves. Almost as horrifying as the sheer volume of rapes themselves is what happens next: the documentary posits that school administrators are failing our students, promising them a safe haven for academic life, but then turning their backs when they report rapes. One of the statistics is that over the next year, over 100,000 women will be sexually assaulted on U.S. You might be aware that campus rape is a problem, but the numbers offered up by The Hunting Ground are startling. Last September, President Barack Obama announced his " It's On Us" campaign, a program that strives to put an end to sexual assaults on campus, and Rolling Stone's controversial story on an alleged rape at the University of Virginia dropped last November.

It's comes at a time when this topic is a hot-button issue. I wish and hope for more change on campuses, but I fear the repressive sex culture will be too overwhelming to take on currently. As heart-wrenching and infuriating it is to watch The Hunting Ground, a chilling exposé on campus rape culture, it's an important and very necessary one. The advent of title ix reporting brought on a lot of forced change to campuses all around the US. Clearly, that isn’t the case – other crimes exist but the reporting wasn’t taken seriously. I can remember when I was a tour guide on campus that we were told to say that the biggest crime on Penn State Campus was bike seat left. When it comes to rape/sexual assault victim reporting, procedural justice doesn’t really exist.

Not only was her reporting ignored but she was stalked and sought after by a law enforcement professional who made sure they stripped her of her scholarship, career aspirations, and jobs on/off campus. I shouldn’t have to walk in to a meeting on Penn State Campus and listen to a story about a person whose sexual assault report was ignored to know that it exists. It is a reflection on the lack of seriousness to human suffering in a supposed ‘progressive society’. My language should not be mistaken for an attempt at chaotic incitation. When students who have been sexually assaulted are told they should think ‘long and hard’ before reporting, I won’t encourage others to maintain civil diplomacy.

If going to college now includes the complementary experience of being sexually assaulted, I won’t be demure while others silently suffer. If creating a great academic empire also means creating platforms for condoned rape, I don’t think I can/or anyone should maintain a polite silence anymore.

To save face against morally and ethical wrongs due to the lack of proper reporting/investigation of sexual assaults. Why are learning institutions protecting and contributing to the socialized culture of silence for abhorrent crimes? To protect the name and caliber of their institutions.

They happen everywhere and even in the most prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, Duke, Columbia, etc. The role of silence, shame, sex objectification are concepts that are socially-acceptable and reserved for the uneducated, uncivilized, and meek. I encourage everyone to watch this documentary as it reveals a lot of true and relevant information that isn’t such a foreign concept to our own learning institution. I watched the most disturbing documentary the other day on rape culture on campuses called The Hunting Ground.
